Colour

This poster is on a black background with foreground colours of red, white, and yellow to make the message and picture stand out. The solid red stands for Canada as a stable country with a good government. The yellow is a reference to prosperity. Wheat that is ready to be harvested is a healthy, golden yellow, as is the compass, the wheat on the compass, and the words "WEST IS ALWAYS BEST".

Symbols

The compass on the poster symbolizes choice. Of all the directions, which is the best choice? The compass shows wheat growing from the West, showing that prosperity comes from the West. In addition, the letter 'W' is much larger and bolder than the other compass directions, as well as in a different colour, drawing attention to it.

There is also text and the coloured corners, but the compass is definitely the main image on the poster. As was explained in the previous paragraph, it depicts a choice, and the text makes it clear that Canada West is the place to choose! The colourful corners are simply to make the poster more attractive and draw attention to it, and the text brings forth the message of the poster. The wheat growing out of the compass shows that a lot of wheat is grown on the prairies, and that Canada West is the place to grow healthy crops.

The slogan on this poster is "CANADA WEST IS ALWAYS BEST". It is a catchy phrase with a meaning that can clearly be understood at first glance- that Canada West is the place to go. The reason this slogan was used is that it goes well with the compass theme of the poster, and it rhymes to make it a sentence that will stick in your mind easily.

Textual Information

The main textual information on the poster is the slogan, as explained in the previous paragraph, however, if you look closely, you will notice that there is more to it. If you read the diretions on the compass, it adds to the phrase, making it "North, East, South, West, CANADA WEST IS ALWAYS BEST". Mainly, the textual information tells people that Canada West is a great place to go to start a new life and be successful.
